In Malaysia, women from disadvantaged backgrounds, particularly in rural areas, often face limited opportunities for formal employment due to various challenges such as geographic isolation, family caregiving responsibilities, and the high cost of childcare. These limitations hinder their ability to engage in traditional full-time employment or entrepreneurial activities, despite some possessing knowledge of online business or trade skills.

The Batik Craft Malaysia, a social enterprise, aims to address these challenges by providing women with opportunities to generate income from home through its outsourcing model. This approach allows women artisans to work as home-based producers, crafting handmade batik items while balancing their family responsibilities. 

By not solely relying on assignments from The Batik Craft, the artisans are also encouraged to seek independent income-generating opportunities, fostering both flexibility and financial empowerment.

To further support the artisans, The Batik Craft operates an Operation Studio, a facility that functions as a central hub where artisans can collect sewing materials and fabric, receive training, attend meetings, and access resources. This studio is offered free of charge for work related to The Batik Craft, ensuring that artisans have the necessary tools and support to thrive. By purchasing batik fabric from local manufacturers, The Batik Craft also contributes to strengthening the local batik industry and employment opportunities.

The success of this model is evident in the 30% income increase reported among the 65 women artisans currently engaged with The Batik Craft.
